Profile
Yishu’s research interests are based on education and psychology. She studied for her BA in Education at Beijing Normal University while exchanged to the Master’s programme of Learning Sciences (http://www.en.mcls.lmu.de/study_programs/master/index.html) at the Ludwig-Maximilian Universität, Munich in 2011-2012. Yishu then gained her Mphil and PhD at the University of Cambridge Faculty of Education, Psychology, Education and Learning Sciences group, supervised by Dr Sara Baker http://www.educ.cam.ac.uk/people/staff/baker/).
Research
Yishu’s research aims to improve adolescents and young adults’ lives by exploring factors that can support their learning and development. Her PhD work aimed to increase women’s representation in STEM fields by identifying people’s implicit biases towards scientists, biases that may hinder women from pursuing STEM careers. Yishu developed and tested instruments that can detect automatic cognitive patterns that are not under the subject’s conscious control. She also conducted large-scale surveys and analysed quantitative datasets to obtain a better understanding of implicit stereotypes and their potential influence on human behaviours.
She uses implicit association test, survey and interview and works with teachers in school to translate research from psychology into educational contexts. How can unconsicous and conscious biases affect students' learning? What role does empathy play in students school life? What strategies do students use to meet life challenges and stay positive, and how can teachers and parents support this? Later in development, what are the key factors during adolescence that has a lasting effect on adults’ well-being. Yishu’s projects addressing questions like these are funded by Yangzhou University Top Tier Scholar Grant.
